It has been six years since I published Driving by Starlight and The Divine Comedy of the Tech Sisterhood. I am excited and terrified to announce my next novel, Her Golden Coast.

You can purchase it via any of the links here. It has a few reviews already on Goodreads, but I really hope you’ll be willing to post your own, especially on Amazon where the number of reviews determine the likelihood of the novel showing up in search results to more readers.

I shared a lot of details about the behind-the-scenes in my newsletter, so I’ll keep this post short.

Why I wrote the book

What does it take for a woman to belong in today’s society? It is, almost always, to sacrifice her art, to sublimate her creative side into a more biological function, to play into the demands of capitalism.

What if… we didn’t have to?

Laurie, the cautious planner, and Malini, the fearless free spirit, stumble into the beauty and terror of sapphic awakening in a San Francisco brimming with potential and prejudice. Set in the simultaneously decadent and toxic landscape of the 2000’s tech boom, Her Golden Coast is a raw, electric exploration of queer desire, identity, and the fight for acceptance. As one reviewer says, “with astute observations on gender, class and privilege, it perfectly captures — and skewers — one of the world’s richest cities and the unique blend of people that occupy it.”

When and where is the launch party?

It’s more like a launch soiree than a party, but there are still a few spots open for the event in SF. Get in touch if you’re interested.

  1. 16 August 2024, 6:00 PM — 8:00 PM — London, United Kingdom (FULL)
  2. 27 August 2024, 6:30 PM — 8:30 PM — San Francisco, USA (Spots available)

What can I do to help?

SO MUCH. The most valuable thing, of course, is reading and reviewing the book. In the attention economy, where algorithms govern our lives, your reviews are make-or-break for any creator. But you can also help by talking about the book with your friends, especially if they are readers, writers, or book club members. If you’d like to go the extra mile and post / share on social media, you are VERY welcome to do so. Use #HerGoldenCoast so I can find any mentions.

What people are saying

Reviews from other authors

  • “a razor-sharp insight into San Francisco’s tech scene. With astute observations on gender, class and privilege, it perfectly captures — and skewers — one of the world’s richest cities and the unique blend of people that occupy it. Behind the bite and wit, however, is a tenderly rendered queer love story that gives the novel a warm and beating heart. I’ll be thinking about Laurie and Mal for a long time to come.” — Kia Abdullah, Author of TIMES BESTSELLER Those People Next Door
  • “What truly sets this novel apart is its fearless exploration of queer love in a modern context while grappling with themes of individual purpose, societal definitions of success and status, and the value of art (and artists). Deracine handles these theme with grace and sensitivity, providing a refreshing perspective that is both heartfelt and empowering. The romance is genuine and profound, making you root for Mal and Laurie every step of the way.” — Osman Haneef, Author of The Verdict
  • “offers a queer female consciousness to the Kerouac tradition of self-discovery at a breathless pace. It targets an audience of women (X-ennials and earlier) who came of age when sexuality and socioeconomic status had no real fluidity, and builds a place of permission, alongside Laurie, the protagonist, for all those who still struggle or strangle within a capitalistic patriarchy despite the clear signs of its failing and dissolution. ” — Caroline Manring, Author of Manual for Extinction and Ceruleana

Community Reviews (goodreads)

  • “It’s hard for me to contain my enthusiasm as a millennial South Asian person working in tech in a predominantly white country for a story where one of the main characters is a very successful and enigmatic Indian woman who enjoys dominating Silicon Valley startups filled with men.”
  • “masterfully captures the essence of fated lovers amid the dynamic landscape of Silicon Valley’s cycles of boom and bust”
  • “The writing is strong and the metaphorical backdrop is so well done… Highly recommended.”
  • “one of the best books I have read in a while”
  • “I genuinely got tangled in Anat Deracine’s writing style. It is seductive, confusing, clear, simple, truthful, romantic, and humorous. Did I mention seductive?”
  • “Amidst a sea of our modern take on young adulthood and romance, this one stands out… The writing was sharp, the emotional beats gratifying and earned, the characters were so realistic, I felt I saw in them not only myself, but so many of the types of people I’ve met in real life.”
  • “a slow burn of epic proportions”
  • “The writing is straightforward yet powerful.“

At least for the moment, it is among the most recommended books on NetGalley.
